More Weather Woes…..

And I thought it was only going to get better!
We have just come limping out of  the other side of the worst storm to hit since 1999!
We were woken at 5am on Saturday morning by fierce winds and horrible noises…too scary to be lying awake in bed, just inches from the roof. I took Diddy [...]

Having a Blonde Moment

In my quest to stay abreast with all things current, I subscribe to Google alerts. One of my alerts is ‘Aquitaine’. Quite often I will get an alert something along the following lines….‘$7750 top a WA’s first blonde female sale’ or ‘Blondes reach record price at Ulverston’. At first this was quite shocking…had I inadvertantly [...]

Happy Birthday, your Ma’am-ness

Today is the anniversary of Marie-Antoinette’s birthday…perhaps the most famous French queen…her of big hair-do’s, even bigger dresses, cakes and terrible sore throats. The Wikipedia entry makes interesting reading.

To Autumn

The nights are nippy, the mornings fresh. Dawn mists sulk in the hollows until the sun chases them away. Dewy footprints follow us to the car. The smell of woodsmoke fills the air. Shots from a distant chasseur ring out through the stillness, startling the dog into a frenzy of barking.
Bright orange, jocular pumpkins and fantastical gourds in all [...]

French Schools Thrive on English Children

According to this article, French schools are thriving on the influx of English children to the classrooms.
For one thing, they are helping to keep open small, rural schools, which would otherwise be closed, resulting in the children being sent to local town schools. And, judging by what I have seen at our village school, funding is available for expanding [...]

How to write a novel in France

Is it true that everyone has at least one book to write?
I for one, wouldn’t have a clue where to start, but it would appear France is as good a starting point as any! For example, Peter Mayle, Helena Frith-Powell, that Colin Firth/Darcy fella in Love Actually, to name a few.
But here is a useful [...]

King of France found

In my alerts today, I got two reports on the King of France, living in Bhopal, India. (Two reports…it must be true!) My curiosity was well and truly piqued!
Why should this story warm the cockles of my heart? I really don’t know, but I think it’s a great idea. Wouldn’t we love it to be [...]

Aquitaine invaded by killer hornets

I keep reading in the news about the Asian killer hornets, Vespa velutina, that are devastating the bee population of Aquitaine.
The hornets escaped from a consignment of Chinese pottery in 2004 and have been spreading North, enjoying the warm climate. Fears are that the hornets will eventually make their way up through France to England.
Although they can give a [...]

Aquitaine Captured

There have been some beautiful pictures added to the Aquitaine Captured  group on Flickr over the past few weeks. They are truly awe inspiring!Take a look for yourselves, I’m sure you will agree!
If you feel inspired and want to add some of your own Aquitaine photos, it is free and easy to join. We would love [...]

The secret to instant integration in France

Check this out!
I never knew it would be so straight forward and simple!
And it is so true…never enter a boulangerie, doctors office, the Mairie, without a ‘Bonjour, tout le monde’.
Admittedly, it doesn’t come easily for us stuffy Brits. Our communities are now so large and ill-defined that we don’t say ‘hello’ to anyone unless [...]
